Dreams and dreammakers… the story of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. In 1907, there were public schools, a post office, and a water system in Long Beach, but the closest hospital was in Los Angeles, a three-hour drive by horse-drawn carriage. Seeing the need for medical care closer to home, four physicians and four community residents each gave a philanthropic gift to help build a hospital for their growing community. The November 23, 1907 edition of The Press announced the opening of the new 18-bed, 13-room Victorian home known as “Seaside Hospital.”

With the city’s population nearing 10,000 in 1912, a new, larger Seaside Hospital opened in downtown Long Beach, complete with the most modern hospital technology, including “nursing call lights.”

The success of the first-ever community fund-raising campaign in 1960 made it possible for Seaside to move to the current campus. To define its location and expanding role in the community, the name was changed to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center—now the second largest not-for-profit community medical center west of the Mississippi and home to more than 4,500 nurses and employees, 1,500 physicians, and over 700 volunteers.

A teaching/research hospital for over 50 years, Long Beach Memorial trains residents and fellows in 24 graduate medical education specialties, including family medicine residents. In response to the critical shortage of nurses, Long Beach Memorial partnered with California State University, Long Beach to be a satellite campus for the baccalaureate nursing program, thereby increasing the number of graduating nurses each year and housing the first skills lab with “human” simulators for training health care professionals.

The vision of eight philanthropists in 1907 continues to be a testament to community involvement that impacts civic life for all residents. Philanthropy ensures a medical center on the leading-edge of health care. You are invited to join the ranks of those early pioneers with your own philanthropic gift—etching your place in history.
