Memorial Women’s Hospital League of the MemorialCare Center for Women strives to bring literacy to mothers and their babies. Volunteers deliver over 3,000 “Books for Babies” each year. The storybook, now in its fourth edition, has received praise from former First Lady Barbara Bush and current First Lady and librarian Laura Bush. The league’s president, Mary Alice Braly, says members are very proud of the accolades and have included a letter from the First Lady in the newest edition. The league also works with the center’s nurses to educate moms-to-be about the hospital in their The Stork Club program. They invite new members to help provide a welcoming experience for new and future mothers.

Team Spirit fundraising benefits the Todd Cancer Institute’s MemorialCare Breast Center. The group was started by cancer survivors and friends dedicated to supporting research and raising awareness of breast and ovarian cancers in the local communities. After nine years, their annual “Team Spirit 10K Walk” is breaking records, welcoming over 800 walkers in 2007. “Our goal for the year was to raise $100,000 to coincide with Memorial’s 100th anniversary, and we definitely made our goal,” says Team Spirit co-founder Stacie Baker. “Last year was our best to date.” They hope to welcome even more walkers and increase philanthropic support of their mission.
